Genetic Analysis to Elucidate the Natural History and Behavior of Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in the Wider Caribbean: a Review and Re-Analysis

– Surveys of hawksbill turtles in the Atlantic Ocean have been undertaken to examine mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity and to test hypotheses concerning female reproductive migratory behavior and the composition of foraging ground populations. Studies of nesting females indicate that a natal homing mechanism predominates and that nesting populations should be considered separate stocks. Analyses utilizing maximum likelihood algorithms have indicated that foraging populations are composed of cohorts from several regional nesting colonies. The significant haplotype frequency shifts between two foraging areas (in Puerto Rico and Cuba) indicate the contributions from regional nesting areas differ from location to location. These differences may be attributed to the proximity of nesting areas, the availability of foraging habitat, oceanographic conditions, and migratory behavior. Management practices such as head-starting also may impact the demography of foraging populations.
